The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Comes After Lukewarm Feedback

Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a distinct direction.

The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire message from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our players.

The trust in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving him next week. We are all eager to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the months to ahead.

David

He previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Take on the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that shift every match. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can secure victory? The option is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can look forward to more updates as production progresses.
