The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down AI-Created Holiday Commercial In the Wake of Backlash.

The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas advertisement created with Artificial Intelligence following encountering widespread public disapproval.

The short spot was developed via generative AI clips and was originally released on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Criticism and Removal

Shortly after its release, viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the advert. Several described it as "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This moment serves as an important learning as we explore the effective application of generative technology," stated a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of situations that often go badly during the festive season, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Trend of AI Commercials

Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have become a rising phenomenon among prominent companies, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because segments produced with current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be only short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also sparked worries about automation in the production industry, with some commenters pointing out it might negatively impact work for actors.

Response from the Creators

After the ad being taken down, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

According to her, the creation required "seven weeks" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then crafted afterward "just as we would on any standard production".

"This was not an experiment," Bridge asserted. "The result was a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the sentiment for some AI-assisted campaigns has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, various brands have also encountered scrutiny for using AI in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "lazy" and "disturbing".

The episode underscores the evolving debate within the marketing and production sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and audience reception.
