British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
