Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
