The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
